Know your Hospital the Essentials

Facility Management and Safety

The management and safety of the hospital facility is an important part of quality improvement and patient safety. A Safety and Risk Management Committee has been constituted to act as an advisory body, with Director as its chairperson. The committee conducts extensive safety rounds of the facility and offers suggestions for improvement, where necessary. The safety manual has been compiled by the Safety and Risk Management Committee, which gives information on staff response to hazardous situations. A disaster plan has also been formulated. Mock drills for external and internal disasters are conducted. A policy for hazardous materials that must be strictly followed by all staff members has also been formulated.

The basic responsibilities of the staff are:

  • To know and respect the ‘No Smoking Policy’
  • Fire safety
  • Handling hazardous material spill eg. Formalin and Cidex spill , Blood Spill etc
  • Patients Rights and Responsibilities.

Accident Prevention

  • Hospital strives to provide the environment free of recognizable hazards and to reduce the risk of injury. Hospital assures a safe environment for patients, personnel and visitors by establishing a safety management program.
  • Hospital policy also includes compliance with all safety and health standards and regulations in accordance with legal and contractual requirements.
  • Preventing accidents is largely a matter of individual responsibility. Employees should keep in mind the following, which will help to make Hospital a safe place to work.
  • Follow all hospital and Department safety policies and practices.
  • Be continuously informed about the fire rules of the Hospital, the location of the fire extinguishers and fire alarms, and the responsibilities of each employee in case of a fire.
  • Avoid accidents by eliminating hazards and developing safe work habits.
  • Keeping work areas clean and tidy. Bad housekeeping cause more accidents at work than anything else.
  • Report all accidents to the head of the department or chief security officer immediately.
  • Obey the sign and posters – they are there to remind of what should be done.
  • Report to the department head / supervisor immediately.
  • Always be alert to the safety hazards of wheelchairs and other equipment used by patients or fellow employees.
  • Never operate electrical equipment with wet hands.
  • Apply proper body mechanics when lifting or bending. (knees bent back straight).
  • Make every effort to keep the hospital clean and orderly.
  • Dress suitably for work. If you have been given special clothing to wear such as coat or any other dress, it makes sense to wear them – they are there to protect you.
  • In any emergency, try to act calmly and quickly.
  • Pay attention to the instructions of supervisor/manager to know from experience what causes accident. If in any doubt clarifications should be sought immediately.
  • Remember that many accidents also happen outside workplace i.e., while driving and at home. So similar care must be taken on the road and at home as at work.
